Schroeder’s Resignation Wasn’t His
Decision Tom Schroeder didn’t resign as LHS
head football coach because he wanted to resign. The school district asked for his resignation
as head football coach. Schroeder says
he was told he wasn’t taking the program in the right direction. Schroeder coached three years at LHS with a
record of 11-19 and a better record and better number of players out for
football each year. Schroeder says he
was asked to resign on Tuesday and gave his letter of resignation on
Wednesday. Schroeder also stepped down
as head track coach saying that he will be pursuing other jobs and wouldn’t be
able to focus on track enough to be fair to the LHS athletes. Schroeder is speaking to the media today for
the first time since his resignation.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008 Schroeder Resigns at Liberal After three years as head football coach, Tom Schroeder
has resigned his coaching duties at LHS.
Schroeder gave his letter of resignation to the LHS athletic office this
morning. Schroeder has also resigned as
head track coach which he was going to coach this spring for the first
time. Schroeder coached three LHS
football teams going 11-19. All three of
Schroeder’s teams were the District 8 runners up and made it to the
playoffs. The Redskins were 5-5 this
year after a 4-6 season in 2007 and a 2-8 season in 2006. Schroeder had more players out for football
each year at the school and had 97 out to start this season at the 5-a school. Schroeder rebuilt Hugoton into a playoff
team going 37-21 at the 4-a school before accepting the Liberal position. Schroeder has not resigned his teaching
position at this time. Next season will
mark the fifth time in eight years that LHS had a coaching change going into
their football season. The football tradition
rich school has five state championships and five runner up finishes but the
Redskins have just two playoff victories the past nine years.

SCCC/ATS Board of Trustees Considers Adding More Sports The SCCC/ATS Board
of Trustees continues to look at adding a new athletic program. The board is considering soccer, golf, or
cross country. SCCC/ATS president Duane
Dunn presented information regarding which schools in the Jayhawk conference
have these programs, how much each program would cost and the scholarship money
needed to support these programs. The
college would need to add a new program by February to have enough time to hire
a coach and recruit student athletes.
The board directed the adminstrative team to further evaluate the
budgetary implications of the sports for possible implementation of golf and
cross country in 2010 and soccer in 2011.
